Should I delete my social media?

I’ve been thinking a lot this week about deleting my social media. I’ve already deleted my Snapchat and Instagram… this wasn’t too hard because I hardly use them anyway.

Why would I do this?

I feel like every time I log on to social media, specifically Facebook, there’s a lot of negativity. I feel like my life would be less stressful if I didn’t have the daily negative impact from social media – like you’re beginning the day wrong. It doesn’t matter if it’s news stories or peoples constant complaints, it all counts towards the negative vibes.

Inspiration:

I feel like these guys have really inspired me, and to be honest, their case study had the outcome I expected too.

The Frustration:

Facebook is always my go-to app when I’m bored! I want to learn Spanish, shouldn’t my language-learning apps be my go-to place? Shouldn’t I be putting my time to good use? I already have a Facebook timer on my phone so it notifies me when I’ve been on there for 30 minutes, then I have the option of spending longer on the app or banning the app for the day.

Also, Facebook Messenger. How frustrating! I’m sick of people asking me stupid questions all the time. They’re not respecting my time, I often get interrupted while I’m studying to answer course-related questions. I’m not the tutor, speak to the tutor if you’re confused about something relating to the course! I think this should be student 101, not “Amy is my go-to person if I’m confused”. I don’t get paid for it, and you’re wasting my time. 90% of the time I find their information in the course material the tutor has put online! It’s easy to find! If I delete Messenger, this annoyance will stop 🙂 Yey!

Other Social Media Apps:

I’ll be honest, I won’t be giving up Pinterest, I rarely go on there anyway, but when I do it’s for something useful like to get inspiration for a cake design.

Twitter… I’ve tried to get into… not really digging it… I can easily get rid of that.

What I’m hoping…

I hope if I delete my social media I’ll be more relaxed. I’ll go on fewer rants. I’ll generally be more chilled out.

Why haven’t I done it already?

I run two Facebook groups, one for my faculty, the other for history students at my university. Although I’m no longer an academic representative, I still post useful stuff for other students. It’s hard to give it up…

Have you ever thought about giving up social media? Tell me about your experiences.

  1. As a blogger I pretty much stick to twitter and Instagram (I’m pretty sporadic on Insta despite wanting to post regularly lol). I get it though- social media can be exhausting! And negative. I gave up Facebook a few years ago- I mean, I check in very irregularly, like a few times a YEAR- and I have to say I don’t miss FB at all. It was all old high school friends anyway, and the ones I wanted to stay friends with… I did? So there’s that. 🙂

I can see how it would be useful for school though. Good luck whichever way you go!

    • Hi Greg,

      I hope all is well!

Today I picked up the courage to delete my Facebook 🙂 which means I’ve now deleted Facebook, Twitter, Insta, and Snapchat! Wow! I almost forgot to send out a few messages to friends to give them my Whatsapp details lol.

I’m actually really excited! 🙂 Your message was very reassuring to me when you said you don’t miss it and it’s been gone a few years now. I assume all people I’m actually close to will contact me for my details if they want to stay in contact 🙂

I think less stress is definitely the way to go. No more depressing social media!

      Take care,

      Amy
