So yesterday I had my first-afternoon volunteering at the Dove House shop. This is because I want to start training before I get paid (I may be waiting a while for all the paperwork to be sorted! 🙂 ) and I’d rather be prepared.
It went really good! I met more volunteers. Everyone was really nice again. I spent the afternoon learning about how the crafting section is organised, tidying the crafting and book rooms, and restocking books 🙂 Two things I love are books and crafting. It was really good because we had a delivery of classics that had some amazing, old-style covers. We also had a delivery of piano sheet music from 1933! This cost 35p back in the day.
Overall, I had a really good day. I did the tidying because I wanted to, not because they asked. I just thought if I was a customer, it would look more attractive that way. I did explain to them later I’d be happy to totally re-organise everything upstairs into a better order, however, I was very aware that there were other jobs that needed doing so I didn’t think we could warrant the time used on that. Apparently, I got 100 points for saying that! lol.
I’ve been asked to come in on Mondays for my training for now 🙂 It’s the day after my future shifts, so there may be some leftover duties I can do that are normally Sunday jobs. I also offered to come in on different days to help out because I’ll get to know the ropes faster and different days may be better for learning different skills. I’m going back in today for the full day, in the morning I’ll be learning how to use the cash register 🙂 It’s up to me what I do in the afternoon, I can stay on the shop floor, sort goods, or learn something new. It’s really nice that they are giving me plenty of space and opportunity to learn 😀 I really like that.
I’ll keep you guys updated! 🙂
